Initial responsibility during this assignment is to support the Application Management team of Tele2 Netherlands with daily management of several applications, running on windows servers (2008, 20012R2) and linux servers (Redhat, CentOS, Solaris) and interfacing via middleware (webmethods, Tibco). Another part of the assignment was to improve some processes to reduce the workload of the team. During the assignment my activities became more focused around the monitoring system OP5 (based on Nagios XI). Tasks:

  • Incident management; (pre-)analysis of incidents for some Tele2 internal applications in cooperation with scrum based change teams, prioritization of incidents, communication to business, involvement of delivery and installation. As scrum was not 100% applicable to application management, a mix of scrum and ITIL was used.
  • Configuration of monitoring (in OP5, a shell on Nagios) for all applications within the domain of Application Management.
  • Supporting other teams to translate there (functional) monitoring needs to technical terms to get it implemented (if required in cooperation with technical teams in Sweden).
  • Implementing monitoring checks, which involves scripting in bash, perl, (pl)sql, powershell, soap, xml on windows and linux systems and oracle databases.
  • Improving quality, maintainability and security of the OP5 monitoring system by replacing low quality plugins by generic reusable high quality plugins.
  • Migrating monitoring system OP5 from a standalone system to a load balanced and geo redundand system running on 2 new virtual machines with automatic fail-over. This project involved a lot of cooperation with infra teams (unix, windows, dba's, it-security) both on site and offshore. In scope of the migration, also a lot of cleaning an restructuring of monitoring checks was done.
  • Handing over maintenance and configuration of monitoring system from local Application Management team towards a central team in the organization including defining new processes.
  • Participating in project for offloading processes from Oracle production database to realtime replica databases.
  • Automation of (parts of) the user management. Uniform procedures were created in several application to perform user management tasks (semi-)automatically. This reduces the recurring workload on user management significantly and improves reliability.
